The Glance for Oct. 4, 2010: Hugh MacLeod says avoid the trap of 'creativity for its on sake'

I don't remember hearing this idea expressed before, but it's very powerful. I often hear people say they want to get away and be creative. Better to stick around and do something creative for others.

gapingvoid.com newsletter: Cartoon #184, 2010-Oct-4, by Hugh MacLeod

...as agreeable an idea as "Creativity for its own sake" is, it's not particularly sustainable, financially rewarding or emotionally satisfying over the long run. Human beings are hardwired to embrace "Creativity With Purpose"- i.e.create stuff that actually has real value to ourselves and other people. Creativity is tied into our evolution as a species and our basic survival instinct.

Encouraging Email from CharityFocus.org

Since I study email newsletters, I receive many, but there's one that frequently cuts through the clutter straight to my heart. The "Daily Good" email arrives in your box pretty early in the morning and tries to set your attitude for the day. Recently, the email included this quote:

Stubbornly persist, and you will find that the limits of your stubbornness go well beyond the stubbornness of your limits. --Robert Brault.

The quote was followed by a real-life example, and a recommendation to do or see something in a new way.

CharityFocus.org has found many ways to leverage the internet for a better society, and I highly recommend a visit.
