Dr. Mark Makes Sense of Working Life
The work of Dr. Mark Albion is an antidote to all those people who think we take our work too personally. He not only encourages us to work with passion, he offers practical support and direction to help us realize a work-life full of meaning and spiritual reward.
His enterprise Making a Life, Making a Living, is popularly know as ML2, where he advises people on finding a career they can love. I found him through Fast Company magazine, but he's also one of the founding members of Net Impact.
Here's an excerpt from a newsletter where he talks about professionals who've lost a job and maybe even a career to technological or economic change:
Simply stated, those who are supporting other people are the ones picking themselves up. They are not as focused on the "self" and the problems of the "self." The single, the divorced, those with older children they are wallowing in the "self." Is it because if you have a family you have more pressure to get a move on and make some dough now? Partially, but I really think it is something deeper.
Filling in holes is not about being selfserving. It is about using ALL of oneself, of boldly doing the things that make you come alive again with passion and energy to relaunch a new career, a new "you." You may combine some of the old with the new (e.g., dr. Mark bringing biblical texts into an ML2 speech), or you may do something quite different (e.g., marketing executive teaching primary school).
Filling in the holes is not about "downsizing;" It's about "rightsizing." It's not about following the "bright light," the shiny new penny; It's about following the "right light," the inner light that makes you glow. It's not about being the "best in the world;" It's about being the "best for the world."
Subscriptions to his web site are $60 and include an email newsletter, invitations to some of his presentations, and the ability to send questions for his personal attention.
