Walking the Fine Talk

Although Chris Anderson (editor of Wired magazine and author of The Long Tail) starts with a good joke, he does a good job of explaining how he intergrates the "long tail" devotion to niche markets with running a mass market magazine, using the "unlimited shelf space" of the web. This explanation is a wonderful example of the "power of And."

The Long Tail: Wired's Long Tail web strategy: the Three Cs. 2007-Aug-10, by Chris Anderson

One of the questions I get most often is how I apply the Long Tail strategy to my day job of running Wired. (Actually, the question I get most often is how I can work for a blockbuster company, Conde Nast, by day and celebrate the decline of the blockbuster by night. My physics-geek answer: it isn't hypocrisy, it's wave-particle duality!)

What holds us back?

The Sartorialist blog is mainly about fashion and clothing styles, but Scott is also very innovative and perceptive. If you follow this link you'll see a whole month worth of Scott's candid photos, including before/after shots of two different young women who moved to New York City and changed their style.

I bet if you ask most people what keeps them from being who they really want to be (at least stylistically or maybe even more), the answer would not be money but the fear of peer pressure - fear of embarrassing themselves in front of a group of people that they might not actually even like anyway.

If you were really honest with yourself and really wanted to change your style what is keeping you from doing that? Is it really the cost? Is it really your psychical shape? availability of goods? Or is it not fitting in at your office, or PTA, or skateboard park?
